PRESENTATION

The mistakes, errors, erasures, and other events of that kind that manuscripts sometimes contain shed light on the operations actors carried out to produce them. How to recognize a mistake, an error, and similar phenomena?

What can we learn from such features of these objects? Can we offer a typology for these accidents and the information that manuscripts thereby provide?

These are the questions that the workshop plans to address.

In 2014, the ERC project "Mathematical sciences in the ancient world" organised a first conference in Hamburg with the Centre for the Study of Manuscript cultures of the University of Hamburg  to study how science manuscripts could offer invaluable perspectives for the study of manuscript cultures (http://sawerc.hypotheses.org/1437).
